Shumba Maasai

In 2025 I collaborated with Zimbabwean musician and visual artist Shumba Maasai to create a new series of portraits for his latest album release and accompanying press materials. The project focused on developing imagery that felt both contemporary and rooted in cultural identity. Together, we experimented with bold, modern color palettes to bring energy and vibrancy to the compositions, while also incorporating motion blur techniques to suggest movement and rhythm that echoed the spirit of his music. Alongside these more experimental elements, we integrated traditional fabrics and garments, allowing the portraits to reflect heritage, texture, and personal narrative. The result was a set of images that balanced innovation with authenticity, capturing Shumba’s artistic presence while visually communicating the themes and tone of his new release.
